2nd Cave Camp (3450m)

2nd Cave Camp (3,450m) is the second overnight stop on the Rongai Route, reached after a moderate 4-5 hour trek from Simba Camp as the trail climbs out of the forest zone and into more open, rugged moorland dotted with heather and scattered rock formations. Named for a nearby rock shelter once used by early travelers and hunters, the camp offers expansive views across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro and, on clear days, glimpses of the plains stretching toward Kenya. The noticeably cooler temperatures and thinning air at this elevation make 2nd Cave Camp an important step in the acclimatization process, giving climbers a chance to rest and adjust before pushing on toward the higher reaches of the route near Mawenzi.
